Zach Braff and Donald Faison cover a lot of ground in this episode of Fake Doctors, Real Friends. Zach has taken to wearing a necklace of crystals that he thinks may be giving him superpowers, which naturally leads to a conversation about satin-covered papasan chairs and whether or not Superman can safely have sex with Lois Lane. And of course they get into their favorite moments of the Scrubs episode they’re watching, “My New Suit,” debating whether or not you should tell friends when you’ve picked out a baby name, how Elliott became so sexually adventurous throughout the course of the show, and how “gerbiling” really works. (The recommended first step may surprise you!) Plus, their call-in guest, Carolyn, blows them away with an incredible story of generosity and courage, leading Zach to conclude, “Donald and I just aren’t good enough people.”
Carolyn, who works in research to develop medicines to cure extremely rare diseases in children, also volunteers with an organization that trains service animals for people with mobility or hearing impairments. Her organization doesn’t work with seeing-eye dogs simply because there are so many groups already doing that work, but Carolyn decided to start following some people with visual impairments who used service animals on social media, just to learn more about their lives. “You really seem like a saint of a person,” Zach comments. “My ex-husband would say something different,” she laughs.
One day, one of the accounts Carolyn followed posted a personal plea: She needed a kidney transplant. Carolyn noticed a link in the post to questionnaire to determine if you were a match, and out of curiosity, she filled it out. A few months, dozens of tests and scans, and one surgery later, the random Internet stranger had Carolyn’s kidney. Zach and Donald pepper her with questions (“Let me see the scar!”) to learn more about the process before they decide to turn her story into a Hallmark movie: “It’s got everything you need: It’s a beautiful woman giving her kidney to a total stranger, and there’s a comical moment with a dog!” They even get the cast worked out. Hear this inspiring story and tons of great jokes in this episode of Fake Doctors, Real Friends.
